After the opening round of fixtures there were numerous impressive performances, including Fulham, who defied the bookmaker the odds with a fantastic win against Newcastle United. A seven goal thriller between Nottingham Forest and newly promoted Burton Albion however there was only one winner for this weeks ‘Team of the Week.’
Relegation can sometimes see a mass exodus and a stuttering start to the campaign, not so for Norwich City, who travelled to Ewood Park and put Blackburn Rovers to the sword within the first half an hour.
A wonder goal from Jacob Murphy, making his debut for the Canaries started things off, Irish magician Wes Hoolahan and Cameron Jerome had the Norfolk club 3-0 up and cruising. Steven Naismith made it four just before the hour mark, leaving the travelling fans in raptures. Anthony Stokes scored a consolation for Blackburn, but that was not enough to spoil the party.
After seeing Newcastle fall to Fulham on Friday, Alex Neil would have been wary about complacency after a year in the top division. His side offered the perfect performance on the opening day of the season.
With such a strong squad, City fans must be optimistic about an immediate return to the Premier League, if players such as Timm Klose, Alex Tettey and Wes Hoolahan stay fit then it is hard to look beyond them for a promotion place.
Next up for the Canaries is a home tie against fellow opening day victors Sheffield Wednesday in what should be a more tightly contested affair..
Meanwhile, Rovers manager Owen Coyle continues his disappointing record with Lancashire clubs, after relative success at Burnley, Coyle has failed to hit the same heights at Bolton and Wigan, most recently he spent 6 months with Houston Dynamo in the MLS before returning to take the reins at Blackburn Rovers.
